Plans for a new state-of-the-art leisure centre in Bramcote have been approved.

Broxtowe Borough Council's planning committee formally approved the designs, which include a 25m (65ft), six-lane swimming pool with viewing gallery and a large fitness suite, at a meeting on Wednesday.

The new facility, backed by Olympic swimmer Rebecca Adlington, will replace the existing leisure centre in Derby Road.

Council officers said that now permission was in place, procurement work and construction planning will get under way.

Plans show the new leisure centre will include a number of facilities, including a 20m training pool, a spin studio, changing facilities and office space.

Solar panels will also be installed on the roof to help reduce the carbon footprint of the building.

Teresa Cullen, portfolio holder for leisure and health, said: "Securing planning permission is a major step forward for this project and we are delighted to be moving into the next phase of delivery of this important community facility.

"We have made some changes to the original proposals following consultation with local residents, stakeholders and user groups to ensure the new centre meets the needs of the local community and supports them to live healthier lifestyles."

Concerns had been raised by residents over the depth of the pool and the lack of a spectator area, which could limit the types of competitions that could be hosted there.

However, designs were amended to include a seating area and to make the pool 2m (6.5ft) at its deepest.

Once plans are developed further, the council will need to give the project further permission before work can begin.
