Police are investigating damage to a competition floral display in Devon.

The damage took place at the Barnstaple in Bloom display over the weekend of 19 and 20 July, Devon and Cornwall Police said.

Officers said the display of valuable and carefully maintained plants was damaged just days before its being judged, and the incident had left many of those involved in its care and maintenance deeply disappointed.

Appealing for witnesses and information, PC Sara Withecombe said: "These displays are created through the hard work and commitment of local volunteers who give up their time to make Barnstaple a brighter more welcoming place for everyone."

She added: "This damage has understandably left them upset and frustrated and we are keen to identify those responsible".
