Thames Valley Police said three offenders wearing balaclavas used two machetes and a metal pole to force entry into a property on Kingsey Road in Thame, Oxfordshire, at about 03:40 BST on Sunday.
The force said the victim had sustained minor injuries but had since been discharged from hospital.
Det Sgt James Waterson said the "violent and deeply distressing" incident had happened while the victims were asleep in their home. He appealed for witnesses or anyone who heard or saw anything suspicious to get in contact.
