A senior parish constable is concerned an increase in household waste fees will have a "significant impact" on the average family.

A price increase took effect at the start of the year - it is now £3.67 for the 90 litre green stickers, a 29p increase, and the orange 50 litre stickers are £2.04, a 16p rise.

Guernsey Waste's annual charge has also increased by £10.03 to £123, with property owners expected to receive bills in February. Both increases were agreed in the 2026 Budget.

A States spokesman said in percentage terms the increase would seem high, however, price increases in recent years have been well below or close to inflation.

Diane Mitchell, St Peter Port Senior Constable, said: "I think 8% is high, I would prefer to go alongside the RPI if there is to be an increase.

"So it is going to all the time make you feel as though your income is not sufficient to meet these charges."

Guernsey Waste said it has been operating at a deficit due to charges paid by households and businesses not covering its services.

Rachel Lowe, operations manager, said: "We recognise that any increase in charges is challenging for households and businesses.

"However, like many organisations, our operations are affected by ongoing inflationary pressures, and without increases to our charges we will not be able to keep pace with these rising costs."

The price changes from 1 January 2026 were:

  • Green 90-litre kerbside sticker is now £3.67, a 29p increase
  • Orange 50-litre kerbside sticker is now £2.04, a 16p increase
  • Leaving a waste bag at the Longue Hougue Recycling Centre is now £4.27, a 34p increase
