Police chew over evidence after choc and gum haul
Cambs PoliceSweet-toothed thieves were caught with thousands of pounds' worth of chocolate and chewing gum stashed in the boot of their car.
Faulty brake lights resulted in police pulling the Audi A3 over last month in Cambridgeshire.
In the boot they found bin bags containing 1,032 suspected stolen items, including chocolate bars, Easter eggs and packs of chewing gum, and further items were found at the driver's address in London, with a total value of more than £7,000.
The Audi driver, a 37-year-old man, and the passenger, a 40-year-old woman, both from Edgware, were arrested on suspicion of theft and released on bail.
Cambridgeshire Police first stopped the car in Fenstanton because it had no working brake lights.
When the driver claimed he was heading to Cambridge to get them fixed, they followed the car and pulled it over again in Huntingdon Road.
Their suspicions were raised as the car was registered to an address in London, but insured to a driver in Dorset.
Cambs PoliceInside the boot, they found 1,032 suspected stolen items including 716 packets of chewing gum, 190 chocolate bars, Easter eggs and assorted boxes of chocolates.
At the pair's London home, an additional 1,055 chocolate bars, 621 packets of chewing gum, protein bars, cleaning products, clothing and other items were found.
The pair's bail conditions prohibit them from entering Cambridgeshire.
