'Storm surge' and 'Christmas banquet'

The West has seen torrential rain this week which has caused severe flooding in some areas but people have still been getting out and about and into the festive spirit ahead of the big day.

Staff at the Edgehill Care Home in Swindon arranged Santa visits and a banquet-style Christmas dinner.

Pink perfection: It's not just early mornings that have been providing cheer to local photographers. Weather watcher Georgia B came across this gorgeous sky on Tuesday afternoon while out and about in Bishopstrow, near Warminster.

Perfect presents: Wiltshire Police Cadets have been busy wrapping hundreds of presents for children who may not otherwise receive anything this Christmas.

Local businesses and members of the public were asked to donate toys and gifts for children who are spending Christmas in care or whose families cannot afford to buy presents.

Somerset

Dream scoop: Hannah Drury and her husband Rupert won a luxurious £4m home in the Lake District in a competition for the price of a £25 ticket.

Ms Drury, a trained opera singer from Frome, said she now wants to share her dream home - and intends to rent it out for other families to enjoy.

Deeply personal: Youth mentor Craig Plowman, 45, from Weston-super-Mare, has completed a 100km (62 mile) trek and raft through the Columbian jungle despite being diagnosed with both ulcerative colitis and enteropathic arthiritis.

Pippa Gribben, CEO of the Jack Hazeldine Foundation, for which Mr Plowman has raised funds, said: "He's a brilliant mentor whose compassion, wisdom and empathy shines through in all aspects of his work and life."
