A woman is in a life‑threatening condition in hospital following a multi-vehicle crash that saw a major road in Hampshire shut overnight.

A Vauxhall Mokka, a Ford Puma, a Ford Kuga and a Volvo collided on the westbound carriageway of the A303, between the junctions of Thruxton Circuit and Salisbury Road near Andover, at about 12:30 BST on Saturday.

The Vauxhall driver, an 82‑year‑old woman, sustained serious, potentially life‑threatening injuries, said police. Two other people were also injured.

The crash caused a "significant fuel and oil spillage, which resulted in damage to the road surface, which now requires resurfacing", National Highways said. The westbound carriageway remains closed.

A passenger in the Vauxhall, a 78‑year‑old man, sustained chest injuries, which are not believed to be life‑threatening or life‑changing, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said.

The man and woman remain in hospital receiving treatment.

A nine-year-old girl riding in the Volvo suffered minor injuries, said the force.

Air ambulance

The eastbound carriageway reopened at about 16:00 on Saturday.

National Highways said it expected the westbound carriageway to remain shut until Sunday evening.

Some motorists remained stationary for more than four hours following the incident, with National Highways assisting those caught within the closure to leave the area by turning around.

Emergency services, including an air ambulance, attended the scene.

Diversions remain in place.
