A cat rehoming charity is fundraising to carry out urgent repairs to the roof of one of its shelters.

Shropshire Cat Rescue, which is based at Bayston Hill near Shrewsbury, said the roof had "several small holes that are likely to get bigger as the weather worsens".

Because the building is an old one, the charity said it was seeking £22,000 as it could contain asbestos and the work prove expensive.

A spokesperson added the work needed to be done "as a priority" before the winter to keep the cats inside the shelter "warm and safe".

Shropshire Cat Rescue has been operating for 21 years and said it had looked after more than 8,000 cats in that time.

It also has a "retirement village" for older animals who are not seeking new homes.

The spokesperson said the organisation's base, which is located on Lyth Hill Road, was "constantly full of cats" so it could not afford to lose any space as it would affect the number it could help.
