Football club quits league over lack of cash

A non-league football club has resigned from its league because it does not have enough money and there has been a "lack of communication from its owner", a club statement said.

Walsall Wood FC vice chairman Ian Sylvester and secretary Casey Boswell said the side would pull out the Northern Premier League with immediate effect.

The league said it had it had formally accepted the resignation with "great sadness".

The BBC has attempted to make contact with the owner in question.

The announcement came after manager Ian Long resigned over unpaid wages earlier this month.

Walsall Wood currently sit tenth in the league table despite their last three matches being postponed.

The club statement thanked league committee members "for their support and understanding during these challenging times" and said the decision had been made with "deep regret".

The club's grassroots arm, which looks after boys' and girls' teams competing across several leagues, will now take control of the club's operations.

"We remain committed to providing a positive environment for young players and will work diligently to ensure the club remains a valuable asset to the community," the statement added.

Fans were informed that their season tickets remained valid for Walsall Wood Ladies, Under-21 and Under-18 matches.

Local clubs Chasetown and Rushall Olympic will also honour season tickets bought before the start of the season, both clubs have said.
