Medieval fair returns as part of series of markets
South Kesteven District CouncilA centuries-old tradition is being revived as part of a series of markets taking place in a Lincolnshire town.
The Medieval Onion Fair, which once drew visitors to see the holy relics at St Wulfram's church in Grantham, will take place in October.
The modern version of the event will see onion-themed goods and crafts, food and drinks featuring dishes made with onions, music, street performers and historical re-enactments, as well as an onion eating contest and onion shows.
The autumn festival is one of many planned for the town's market place, which include an Easter crafts fair, a spring Steampunk market, VE and VJ Day commemorations, Lincolnshire Day and a Diwali celebration.
The new events will run alongside the monthly farmers' market and craft market.
South Kesteven District Council leader Ashley Baxter said "We very much value our traditions in Lincolnshire and our outdoor markets here in South Kesteven remain one of the top draws for visitors.
"This calendar of events is part of the action plan to put them on the map by giving people from within and outside the local area a reason to visit our towns, spend their time and money here and see all we have to offer."
