A woman who took her life after her husband allegedly abused her was stopped by a police officer during another attempt two months before her death, a court has heard.

Christopher Trybus, 43, of Swindon, Wiltshire, is accused of the manslaughter of Tarryn Baird, who died in Swindon in November 2017.

He also faces charges at Winchester Crown Court of controlling and coercive behaviour and two charges of rape.

The court heard that a Wiltshire Police Officer found Baird moments before the attempt on September 19, 2017.

The coercive control charge alleges Trybus controlled Ms Baird through using and threatening violence towards her, sexually assaulting her, monitoring her whereabouts, limiting her access to money, threatening to reveal private information to her family and isolating her from her family.

PC Luke Hobbs said in a statement that he had been sent to Trybus's home after they were called to check the welfare of Baird.

He said he found her in the garage attempting to take her life.

"Although her eyes were red from crying, she didn't have any visible injuries," he said.

PC Hobbs said Baird told him that "her husband was out of the country and didn't want her parents informed".

He said that he asked her what had led to her actions, and she told him she had mental health issues.

Baird's parents arrived shortly afterwards without being informed, and arrangements were made for her to have a mental health appointment on the following day.

Trybus denies the charges and his trial continues.
