Two women have died following a head-on collision between a fuel tanker and a car on the A10 in Cambridgeshire.

Police said the crash happened just north of Ely at about 18:40 GMT on Thursday.

The driver and front seat passenger of the Audi, aged 25 and 71 and both from Littleport, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the tanker, a 40-year-old man from Basildon in Essex, was uninjured. He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and bailed until 10 May.

Police said the tanker left the road and came to rest in a nearby field, while the Audi was pushed 100m (328ft) further up the road.

The A10 remains shut from the roundabout at Comice Way in north Ely to Littleport.

Cambridgeshire Police said it was likely to be closed for the remainder of the day while an investigation takes place.

It has asked for anyone with information or dashcam footage in relation to the crash to get in touch.
