A man has been arrested after a police officer suffered facial injuries while on duty.

The officer, along with his Northumbria Police colleague, was in the King Street, South Shields, at lunchtime when they spotted a "person of interest" and approached him.

Police said one officer was assaulted with a bladed article, causing minor cuts to his face.

A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm, and remains in custody.

A force spokesperson said there was no risk to the wider community but it was understood there were concerns and an increased presence remained in the town.
