Many services have been cancelled across the north-west of England

Rail passengers in the north-west of England have been warned to expect severe disruption following overhead line damage in Greater Manchester.

Network Rail said it meant trains were unable to run between Bolton and Preston, Lancashire.

Services to Manchester Airport from Blackpool North, the Lake District and Scotland, which have to pass through the same stretch of railway line, are all affected.

Trains are unable to call at Bolton while services between Manchester and Preston will be diverted via an alternative route.

A Network Rail spokesman added: "Strong winds brought several trees down overnight causing damage to overhead lines in the Lostock area.

"Delays and cancellations are likely to last throughout the day as engineers are working as quickly as possible to repair the damage to overhead lines."

Passengers are advised to check with National Rail Enquiries.
