A new multi-use games arena (Muga) is set to replace the former airdome at St Mirren's stadium in Paisley.

The facility will be used in a similar manner to its inflatable predecessor for a combination of community, sporting and occasional pre-match activities.

The airdome suffered regular vandalism and weather damage before it was eventually decommissioned.

Renfrewshire Council granted planning permission for the proposal at a meeting on Thursday.

The proposal said the design and appearance of the new arena would be "typical of many steel frame style buildings" found in the surrounding area.

A supporting statement, prepared by agent company Ramsay McMichael Consulting and submitted with the application, said the length and width of the new building would be vey similar to the old dome.

It added: "The proposal building will serve the same function as the previous inflatable dome, with the intended use being a multi-use games arena for sporting activities (primarily football) and to host occasional pre-match activities for younger fans.

"As was the case with the dome, the new Muga is anticipated to be used, not only by the club, but also by the St Mirren FC Charitable Foundation, Street Stuff and many other parts of the local community."

The local authority said the design, scale and finish of the new building would not have "a significant detrimental impact on the character and appearance of the surrounding area."

It added that the Muga would be a welcome addition to the area.
