Thousands of people joined a colourful parade celebrating a town's 800th anniversary.

North Shields has been spending this year marking the milestone with a host of events highlighting its maritime, industrial and cultural heritage.

It culminated with a parade of about 400 people, including a drum band, mobile disco, artists and local groups parading from Northumberland Square and finishing at Western Quay and a live music stage.

Thousands gathered to watch the celebrations which included landmark buildings such as the Registry Office and Ice Factory tower being illuminated with artistic projections.

Elected Mayor of North Tyneside Karen Clark said it had been a "wonderful year for North Shields".

"We've seen stunning murals brighten our streets and many volunteers, artists, and community groups have given their time and energy to organise projects and events," the Labour politician said.

She added the parade was a "fitting celebration" for the project.
