A police officer who was charged with rape will not face court proceedings, BBC Scotland News has learned.

Gary Forbes, 31, had originally appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court in November 2024, accused of raping a 34-year-old woman in the city in August that year.

The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) said that after "careful consideration of the facts and circumstances of the case", including the available admissible evidence, Crown Counsel had instructed there should be no further proceedings taken at this time.

"The Crown reserves the right to proceed in the future should further evidence become available," a statement added.

Police Scotland said: "We are aware of the outcome of the case and the circumstances will now be considered by our Professional Standards Department under the Police Service of Scotland (Conduct) Regulations 2014."

It is understood Forbes has been suspended.
