Heavy rain has been forecast for later in the week

The Met Office has warned that north and north-east Scotland could see persistent and heavy rain and also high winds later this week.

A yellow weather warning has been issued for midday on Wednesday to midday on Friday covering parts of the Highlands, Aberdeenshire and Perth and Kinross.

Forecasters said rainfall accumulations of 30-60mm, about one to two inches, were "likely fairly widely" inland, with up to 120mm (5in) over the highest ground.

The Met Office said there could be flooding in some places because the ground was already wet due to recent rain and thawing snow.

It said strong onshore winds could mean large waves along the coast.

Forecasters said rain would increasingly fall as snow over high ground, especially on Thursday and into Friday.

North and north-east Scotland has previously seen days of snowfall, while heavy rain and melting snow had caused flooding in some areas.

The Met Office has issued a number of amber and yellow weather warnings since the start of the year.
