Woman, 83, dies after being hit by car

An 83-year-old woman has died after she was hit by a car, police said.

Emergency crews were called to Second Street, Watling Bungalows, in Leadgate, near Consett, just after 07:15 GMT.

Durham Police said the woman suffered significant injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, a woman in her 40s, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and taken into custody, officers added.

The road was closed for several hours but has since reopened.
