York fish and chip shop named Britain's best
Dan Bater/BBCA fish and chip shop run by two brothers in York has been named as Britain's best - an award the owners said "every chippy dreams of".
The Scrap Box in Dunnington scooped the 2026 Takeaway of the Year at the National Fish and Chip Awards, which co-owner Aman Dhesi said were the "Oscars of our industry".
The awards are organised by the fish and chip industry association, the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF).
Aman, who runs the chippy with his brother Gavin, said it was "testament to the craft, care, and consistency we put into every portion of fish and chips".
The Scrap Box was one of several Yorkshire chippies to make the shortlist. Mister C's in Selby, Shaws Fish and Chips of Dodworth, Barnsley, and The Fish Bank, Sherburn-in-Elmet, were also in the running.

Gavin said it had been "surreal" to hear The Scrap Box's name being read out at the award ceremony in London on Wednesday night.
"Our first thought went to our staff, our customers, and everyone who has put in the hard work to get where we are today," he said.
"We have put a lot back into the shop to make sure everything is best practice."
BBC/Dan BaterThe chippy is located in a layby at the side of the A1079 on the outskirts of York, in a building which used to be a public toilet block.
Gavin added he believed fish and chips was one of the healthiest takeaways going.
"You have got a piece of white fish which is pure protein from the sea," he said.
"Our batter is flour and water with a few added products and the chips are potatoes straight from the ground fried in beef dripping.
"I think the purity of the product is what sells."
