The court dismissed the bankruptcy petition as Barry Elliott had paid the outstanding amount

Bankruptcy proceedings brought by a county council against one of its own serving councillors have been dismissed after he paid the amount he owed.

Reform councillor Barry Elliott was served with a petition for bankruptcy by Northumberland County Council in November in relation to unpaid council tax and business rates totalling £37,525.97 over a five-year period.

But Newcastle County Court heard Elliott had now paid the full outstanding amount.

Elliott, who was elected for the Newsham ward last year, did not attend court.

District Judge Terrence Phillips said Elliott had "made full payment" on Tuesday and made an order dismissing the bankruptcy petition.

In previous submissions to court, Elliot stated he had "never run away" from his responsibilities".

Northumberland County Council has been approached for comment.
