Thom Campion, a Newcastle councillor, denies sexual assault allegations

The trial of a councillor charged with sexual assault has been delayed until the summer.

Thom Campion, a member of Newcastle City Council, pleaded not guilty to the allegation in September 2025.

The 28-year-old had been due to stand trial at Newcastle Magistrates' Court on Friday but the trial has now been postponed until 9 June.

Campion, of Newcastle Great Park, appeared in the dock on Friday and spoke to confirm his name, date of birth and address. He was released on conditional bail.

Campion was elected to the city council in 2021, originally as a Liberal Democrat, and now sits as an independent.

He also stood as a Parliamentary candidate for Cramlington and Killingworth at the 2024 general election and previously for the Blyth Valley constituency in 2019, under the name Thom Chapman.
