A new £64m school in the Borders has opened its doors to pupils and staff for the first time.

The Galashiels Academy campus is a replacement for the existing secondary in the town.

It has enhanced sporting facilities including a new swimming pool and a hydrotherapy pool.

Headteacher Steven Raeburn said the opening marked a "new and exciting chapter of education in Galashiels".

Julie Pirone, executive member for education on Scottish Borders Council (SBC), described it as an "incredibly proud day for the whole community".

"This is an exceptional building with world-class facilities that will enhance the learning and development of all our young people and help to nurture ambition and aspiration," she said.

"This campus shows our commitment to creating inspiring, shared spaces where young people and the wider community can learn, connect and thrive."

SBC chief executive David Robertson said it was a "fantastic addition to the town".

Phase two of the project will see the demolition of the old school to allow for the redevelopment of Scott Park.
