New plans for railway station area improvements
North Yorkshire CouncilPlans have been submitted to redevelop the area around Scarborough railway station, in a bid to create a more welcoming public space.
North Yorkshire Council said the revised application outlined a series of public realm improvements.
Known as the Station Gateway project, the first phase aims to boost access to public transport and create a more attractive environment for people arriving in the seaside town.
New outdoor seating areas, resurfaced footpaths and tree planting are part of the proposed project, along with accessible parking and improved pedestrian access to the station and nearby transport links.
Mark Crane, executive member for open to business, said: "It is hoped this regeneration can then inspire future investment in the town, ensuring Scarborough remains a vibrant place to live, work and visit.
"The revised plans have been submitted and they will now be carefully considered and rigorously scrutinised as part of our usual planning process."
North Yorkshire CouncilInitial proposals for the first phase of the Station Gateway scheme were developed by Scarborough Borough Council and submitted for planning approval in 2022, prior to the launch of North Yorkshire Council in April 2023.
Following further work, the designs have since been refined, with a greater focus on improving the immediate area around the front of the station.
Plans for the redevelopment would be funded within the £6.68m allocated by the government's Local Regeneration Fund.
