Two Asian hornet's nests removed in Guernsey

Two Asian hornet's nests have been removed in Guernsey, the island's government has said.

The nests, in St Peter Port and St Sampson, were destroyed by the Asian hornet team this week after locals reported seeing hornets.

Francis Russell, from the Asian hornet team, thanked the public for helping to protect "public health and the island's biodiversity" and Guernsey's Civil Protection for securing the area.

He said it was "critical" to find and destroy the nests at this time of year as those "reaching maturity" could release as many as 500 new queens, increasing next year's population.

One of the nests was spotted at the top of a sycamore tree in a private back garden in St Peter Port.

The other was found in a large poplar tree in St Sampson.
