Inspectors to board cruise ship after crew death

Inspectors are set to board the P&O cruise ship Arvia following the death of a member of crew in a lift shaft accident.

The man died on Sunday onboard the Bermuda registered cruise ship during its voyage from Southampton to Tenerife.

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) said a team would be joining the vessel at the next port "to start a preliminary assessment of the accident, and to determine the next steps," at the request of the Bermuda Ship Registry.

The cruise ship that can have up to 5,200 guests and 1,800 crew on board left Southampton on Friday.

Following the man's death the cruise firm expressed condolences and said "every possible support" was being provided to the crew member's family and friends both on board and at home.

The 16-deck cruise ship is on a 14-night transatlantic crossing to the Caribbean and is due to arrive in Barbados on 7 November.
