Man jailed for killing cousin's ex-partner
West Mercia PoliceA man from Telford has been jailed for killing his cousin's ex-partner.
David Lane, of Portley Road in Dawley, killed Paul Wilkins after an argument saw Lane fall on top of the 58-year-old, landing on his neck and breaking four bones.
Despite appeals from Wilkins that he could not breathe, Lane continued to restrain him - until he eventually stopped breathing.
A jury at Birmingham Crown Court found Lane guilty of manslaughter, and he was sentenced to 11-and-a-half years in prison.
The court heard how on 5 April, 2022, Lane was visiting a cousin at their house on Westerdale Close when Paul Wilkins turned up.
In the altercation, 48-year-old Lane suffered a serious leg injury.
Emergency services arrived at the scene within 10 minutes of the first 999 call.
Officers did CPR on Wilkins and he was taken to hospital. However, five days later, he died.
In court, Lane said he was unaware Wilkins could not breathe.
"Our thoughts continue to remain with the family and friends of Paul, who tragically lost his life." West Mercia's Detective Chief Inspector Jo Whitehead said.
"This case has taken over three years to reach court and I want to thank the team who conducted a thorough investigation securing justice for Paul and his loved ones.
"We welcome the sentence handed down to Lane, and hope this outcome provides some measure of closure during what has been, and continues to be, an incredibly difficult time for Paul's family and friends."
