Communities in Powys will get the chance to be involved in the National Eisteddfod for the first time since 2009

Wales' largest cultural festival will return to Powys in 2027 for a week-long celebration of music, language and performance.

The announcement was made at a public meeting in Glantwymyn on Tuesday evening, where more than 100 residents were told the National Eisteddfod would involve communities from across the county and neighbouring south Meirionnydd.

Organisers said thousands of visitors were expected, with opportunities for people of all ages to perform, compete and take part in the build-up to the festival.

Powys County Council will lead preparations, with work starting on competitions and community projects.

The National Eisteddfod is a celebration of Welsh language and culture and has not been hosted in Powys since 2009.

The entire county will be part of the catchment area, which will also include Dysynni Valley, the Dolgellau area and Penllyn due to Glantwymyn's proximity to the border.

National Eisteddfod chief executive Betsan Moses said organisers were looking forward to returning to the area and "welcoming people across Wales and visitors from further afield" for "a very special week".

Work on preparations will begin immediately, with the first meeting taking place at Ysgol Bro Hyddgen in Machynlleth on Saturday.
