Homeless sleeping pods being installed

A charity has announced two emergency sleeping pods are due to be installed in Guernsey.

Caritas was given planning permission for the pods in September in what it described as a "significant step forward" in providing practical support to islanders experiencing homelessness.

The pods, which were delivered from the UK by Amazing Grace Spaces, and will be installed at the Vale Douzaine Rooms on Tuesday.

Graham Merfield, chair of Caritas, said it was "is a hugely important moment" for the charity.

The pods are solar-powered and self-contained with no need for mains services, helping them to be deployable at short notice.

Mr Merfield said: "The pods are not a final answer to homelessness, but they will provide immediate shelter and dignity in times of crisis.

"The project has been made possible thanks to generous support from Northern Trust, who contributed towards the cost of purchasing and shipping the pods."

Dave Sauvarin, head of Channel Islands at Northern Trust added: "Providing safe spaces for those in urgent need reflects our commitment to making a positive difference where we live and work."

Caritas said it was preparing the pods for use, working closely with volunteers, partners and support services to ensure they are safe, welcoming, and ready to provide a vital lifeline to islanders in need.
