Police said the baby was taken to Peterborough Hospital before he was transferred to Cambridge

A murder inquiry has begun following the death of a three-month-old boy.

Cambridgeshire Police said Atijus Elertaite was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition after officers were called to a property in St John's Chase, March, just after 11:00 GMT on 3 January.

The force said he died five days later, and a post-mortem examination determined the preliminary cause of death was a head injury, pending further medical inquiries.

Prior to his death, a 25-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man, both from the town, were arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. Police said they were re-arrested on suspicion of murder on Thursday, but had since been released on bail until 22 April.

Police said the baby was initially taken to Peterborough City Hospital before he was transferred to Addenbrooke's Hospital, in Cambridge, where he died.

Det Insp Verity McCann said: "We know the local community will be shocked and deeply saddened, and our thoughts remain with those affected by Atijus' death.

"We are working hard to establish exactly what happened and urge everyone to be mindful and not speculate on the case, particularly on social media, as this could affect our investigation."

The force has asked people with any information to get in touch via the website, by calling 101 or speaking anonymously to Crimestoppers.
