Clean-up project to target green spaces

Public spaces in six West Midlands towns are set to get a clean-up as part of a project by Sandwell Council.

Running until February, "green hit squads" will work to cut back overgrowing foliage, clear litter, strim and edge grass, remove moss and collect leaves.

The scheme will target Tipton, Wednesbury, West Bromwich, Oldbury, Rowley Regis and Smethwick.

Councillor Keith Allcock said the authority wanted to make Sandwell a "cleaner, greener and safer place to live."

"The ward-by-ward cleanse will make a visible difference across housing sites, highways, parks and other public spaces to ensure that Sandwell is a place that everyone is proud to call home," he added.

The green hit squads will tackle the spots on public land that have been identified directly by residents or through their local councillors.

The council said any further spots identified during this campaign would be inspected to ensure as many areas were cleaned up as possible within the time and resources available.
