Councillors are set to meet on Thursday to discuss plans to relocate an M&S Foodhall in Worcester

A Marks & Spencer Foodhall in Worcester could be moved into a new premises, which the retailer said would provide a "state-of-the-art retail experience".

The scheme would see the store at Blackpole Retail Park move into a unit currently occupied by Oak Furnitureland as well as the adjoining one formerly used by Bensons for Beds.

Worcester City Council's planning committee has scheduled a meeting to discuss the plans on Thursday.

Marks and Spencer also said it considered a number of sites around Worcester, including in Cathedral Square, St Martin's Quarter, CrownGate Shopping Centre and the former Gala Bingo in Foregate Street, before opting to expand its offering at the retail park.

Councillor Jill Desayrah said city centre sites were dismissed "because they would compete with the existing High Street Marks & Spencer".

The Labour councillor for Warndon said the relocation would "inevitably lead to the closure of the High Street Marks & Spencer, accelerating [high street] decline".
