Tributes have been paid to Merseybeat legend Len Garry who has died at the age of 84.

Garry was a member of The Quarrymen, playing alongside Paul McCartney and John Lennon before the band eventually became the Beatles.

His death was announced by his daughter Jane Garry on social media, who said she was "beyond devastated".

Fellow Quarrymen member Rod Davis said Garry was "a great singer who was well loved".

"My mum, my sister, my brother-in-law and myself stayed by Dad's bed holding his hand, talking to him and telling him how much we love him and how proud we are of him as he was passing away and taking his last breaths," she said.

"I love you Dad and I will miss you Dad for the rest of my life. I'm beyond devastated."

Paying tribute, former bandmate Davis said Garry "was very well thought of" and there had been messages of condolence from people in Ireland, Italy and Germany.

"He was a great singer, he had a very good presence on stage," he said.

"He was a good looking guy. He made a big impact when he was fronting the band.

"He was a great musical companion."
