Guernsey Waster said the Christmas and new year period is its busiest time for waste and recycling

People have been urged to check their bin and recycling collection days ahead of schedule changes over Christmas.

Guernsey Waste said households who would normally put their bins out on Wednesdays or Thursdays would be affected by alterations during the festive period, with collections happening earlier or later than normal.

It said the Longue Hougue Household Waste and Recycling Centre would be open up until 15:00 GMT on Christmas Eve before being shut until Saturday.

Douglas Button, waste minimisation and sustainability officer, said Christmas was the "peak time" of year for the service and asked islanders to "spare a thought" to the collection crews who would be working.

"Santa won't be the only one working late at night this Christmas to make sure he gets to every home in Guernsey - whether they have been naughty or nice," Mr Button said.

"If we are lucky, most of us will get the opportunity to put our feet up for some time over the holiday."

Guernsey Waste added the Household Waste and Recycling Centre would operate normal hours after it reopens on Saturday.

It said the site would close at 15:00 on New Year's Eve before reopening on 2 January.

The service said more details about when household collections would take place over Christmas could be found on its website.
