A bridge will have to close again in January after "significant deterioration" was found in its concrete deck.

Durham County Council said Wolsingham Causeway Bridge would shut to both traffic and pedestrians between 5 and 23 January to allow extra repairs to be carried out.

The 131-year-old crossing has been undergoing a refurbishment since May with completion now expected in February 2026.

The Reform-led local authority said a planned temporary re-opening on Friday would still go ahead following a two-week closure for waterproofing and resurfacing. Three-way traffic lights will be in place.

Another closure is planned between 2 and 6 February to remove scaffolding but there will be pedestrian access during this time.
