A wild deer has been spotted running amok in a residential road on Merseyside, leaving families startled.

Sue Sergison said she could not believe it when she opened her curtains earlier and saw the animal "the size of a large Labrador" running past her house near the Strand in Bootle.

"It was very exciting," she said. "I've had a fox on the shed roof before but I've never seen a deer before - it was very cute."

The 64-year-old said she contacted the RSPCA and the non-emergency police phoneline in the hope the deer could be guided back to a safer spot - but later it had been spotted roaming around in a nearby Asda car park.

Sue spotted the deer from her bedroom window at 06:00 BST.

"I was looking out the window as I was getting ready for work and I just tapped to open the blinds and I saw him," she said.

"I went 'Oh my goodness', and thought 'What are you doing here?'

"It was a little bit confused obviously, because he was coming past my house and then going back again up to the road.

"I went out with some carrots but it had gone by then.

"But when I was going to work, I went round the back of the Strand and he was in the tunnel under the railway.

"I was quite concerned in case he got a little bit scared and ran out on to the road and caused an accident."
