Council turns to Cruyff foundation for new pitch

A new multi-sport pitch is being installed in Loughborough using money from a foundation named after legendary Dutch footballer Johan Cruyff.

Charnwood Borough Council said the new facility at Southfields Park is expected to open in 2026.

The "Cruyff Court" will offer a space for sport to be played all year round, with the project totalling £235,000.

Funding has been provided by the government's UK Shared Prosperity Fund and the Johan Cruyff Foundation along with developer contributions.

The foundation supports and develops sports projects around the world for children for where sport is not a guaranteed part of their lives.

Jennifer Tillotson, the borough council's lead member for housing, economic development, regeneration and town centres, said she hoped the new 4G pitch would encourage local people to get active.

Leicester City in the Community will be supporting the project with a programme of activities, events and training.

Senior community manager Matt Bray said: "The Cruyff Court will be an accessible area for all ages to enjoy, bringing a fresh hub for sport, community and youth activities to the centre of Loughborough."
