Under-threat carnival secured by town council
Laura MinorA town council is to take on the organisation a "much-loved" carnival after the group behind it was dissolved, putting the event's future at risk.
Stourport Carnival, which features parades, a fun fair and fireworks display, celebrated its 100th anniversary last year.
In January, the Stourport Carnival Society said due to a lack of volunteers it could not continue to run the popular event, which was first set up in 1925.
Stourport Town Council said a decision was made at a meeting on Tuesday to take on the responsibility of organising the carnival, which attracts thousands of people each year.
The organising committee at the carnival society had taken a vote to disband at a recent meeting, but members had remained hopeful that another group would take up the event.
Stourport Town Council said following the dissolution of the society, it had considered whether it could become more involved in organising the carnival with a view to preventing the loss of an event which was "much-loved".
It also called for those who wished to volunteer for the event to get in contact.
"At a meeting of Stourport-on-Severn Town Council on Tuesday 3 February 2026, a decision was made to take on the responsibility of organising the carnival, and to explore all available options for its delivery," it said in a statement.
"It was recognised that volunteers will be essential to ensure that Stourport Carnival can be delivered safely and successfully.
"Thank you to everyone for your continued support of the carnival and our community events more widely."
Anyone interesting in volunteering has been invited to get in touch.
