Popular paddling pool closed for a second summer

A paddling pool in Hull is to remain closed for a second summer.

The facility in Pickering Park closed last year and Hull City Council says it hopes to have it open again in 2025.

A public consultation on what to do with the space is expected to take place in summer 2024.

A spokesperson for the council said it is exploring whether to improve the pool or develop a new one.

Parents have told BBC Radio Humberside they are disappointed not to have access to the facility.

One parent said: “It would be nice for the kids, wouldn’t it? When I was a kid we always had the paddling pool at East Park in the holidays."

Another added: “I was hoping it would be. That’s a shame because loads of people come.

“We’d come and use it. It’s perfect for everyone and it’s free, which a lot of people make use of.”

Mally Welburn, who runs a land train, swan pedalos and an ice cream business in the park, said he was “absolutely heartbroken” to see the pool closed again.

The businessman claimed about 70% of the footfall in the park uses the paddling pool.

Hull City Council said: “Sadly, we won't be able to reopen the Pickering Park paddling pool this year, but we are exploring our options. We aim to have it reopened in 2025.”
