A 30mph speed limit has been introduced at a Sussex roundabout after nearly 40 accidents in five years.

A 50mph limit on the northbound and southbound approaches to the Washington Roundabout on the A283/A24 near Storrington is also in place, reports the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The cost of the work is expected to be just over £197,000.

A report from the West Sussex County Council's highways, transport and planning team showed there had been 37 collisions on and around the roundabout between May 2019 and April 2024.

The report added: "The package of measures will help to reduce the collision risk at this roundabout."

The council received 12 statements of support from the public and 15 objections.

Supporters felt lowering the speed limit was appropriate, stating that it was difficult to turn onto the road and that the speed of traffic on the roundabout was a concern.

But those opposing the changes said lowering the speed limit would lead to confusion, increase travel times, cause congestion, and was a waste of money.
