A missing golden retriever has been returned with its owners following a police search.

Pets Allegra and Cresca vanished on 20 January after being let out into the garden of a property in the village of Chilworth, Surrey.

Surrey Police, which previously appealed for information on their whereabouts, said on Monday that Allegra, the older of the pair, had been found.

Cresca is still missing, police added.

The force previously said that both dogs were microchipped and easily identifiable.

Police added it was aware of rumours circulating on social media that a silver van was seen in the area at the time of the dogs' disappearance.

Officers had spoken to the owner of the vehicle and ruled out any involvement, it said.

"We are exploring every possibility regarding how Allegra and Cresca went missing," Surrey Police's rural crime officer Hollie Iribar previously said.

"If you have the dogs, have seen them or have any information that might help, please contact us as soon as possible."
