Hundreds of vehicles were stuck in the car park after Saturday's fire

A hospital car park has reopened almost a week after a fire broke out, which forced it to close.

At least 40 vehicles were damaged by the fire, which started on the second floor of Car Park 1 at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.

The county's fire service said the blaze, which began at 16:16 GMT on Saturday, was due to a mechanical fault with a diesel vehicle.

NCP, which manages the car park, said it reopened on Friday at 18:00.

An NCP spokesperson said: "NCP and the trust worked hard to achieve this as quickly as possible, with the help of surveys from structural engineers.

"Our sincere apologies to patients, staff and visitors affected. We appreciate your support and understanding."

Initially, 425 cars were trapped inside the car park, affecting many visitors and patients.

On Wednesday, NCP said 40 of those were too badly damaged to be removed.
