An important city road is to close overnight on Wednesday and Thursday to allow for roadworks, a council has said.

The A4 Portway and Hotwell Road in Bristol will be closed to traffic from 21:00 to 05:00 GMT both nights but will remain open to cyclists and pedestrians, Bristol City Council said.

The closure will start from Bennett Way and Cumberland Basin Road and will end at the Portway's junction with Hadrian Close.

The closures are to allow for barriers to be moved further up the road in preparation for the next stage of the government-funded A4 Portway project which aims to ease congestion and improve public transport along the road connecting Bristol with Avonmouth.

The closures will impact the 9, 41 and 37 buses travelling northbound as they will need to follow a diversion via Hotwells, Clifton Down and Stoke Bishop along with all other motor vehicles.

Hotwell Road West, Merchants Road, Roman Way North and Riverleaze Northwest bus stops will all be affected.

The work will not affect southbound traffic heading towards Bristol city centre.

Wessex Water will also use the closure to replace a broken manhole cover along the Portway.
