Two people have been fined £600 each after a fridge, household fittings, furniture, carpets, rubble and food waste were illegally dumped.

Waste was fly-tipped on Stone Lane, Lydiard Millicent, and on Hook Street, Lydiard Tregoze, in Wiltshire.

Cabinet member for highways at Wiltshire Council Martin Smith said: "Fly-tipping damages our countryside, creates hazards and costs taxpayers money to clear.

"Please take a few minutes to check a carrier's licence and keep a receipt, it's the law and it protects you."

The waste dumped in Lydiard Millicent was traced to a resident in nearby Swindon who had recently moved house and arranged for a collection from an old address.

The person told Wiltshire Council officers they had paid £130 to the driver of a yellow waste van seen driving locally.

In an interview, they said they had not carried out any checks of the driver's waste carrier license or obtained a receipt, the council said.

The resident was fined for not carrying out the proper checks on the waste disposal driver.

At Lydiard Tregoze, a bag of food and personal items were discovered.

These were also traced back to a Swindon resident who was then fined.

Smith added: "Handing waste to someone without checking their credentials is a risk.

"If they dump it, you could be liable and can still be fined or prosecuted."
