City road upgrade is completed ahead of schedule
Peterborough City CouncilUpgrades costing £5.8m have been completed on a major city centre road ahead of schedule.
Lincoln Road in Peterborough has undergone a regeneration, with works including new cycle stands and seating, and a new signalised crossing.
The city council, which commissioned the work, closed the road in August, installing a northbound one-way system between Windmill Street and Stone Lane during the work.
Cafer Koc, owner of the Cafe Algarve in Lincoln Road, said: "We are happy with the finished work and so are many of our customers. Business is picking up and the road looks cleaner and nicer than it was previously."
The project was delivered by the council and its highways partner M Group Ltd, after the authority secured more than £3.4m in funding, including a £2.4m contribution from the government's Towns Fund.
Additional money came from other sources, including developer contributions.
Other upgrades to the area include new uncontrolled pedestrian crossing points, improved paving, the repositioning of the northbound bus border and a new zebra crossing near to the junction with Alma Road.
Lincoln Road in Millfield is one of the busiest and most diverse areas of Peterborough.
The local authority hopes the works carried out between Windmill Street and Serjeant Street will help those who live and work in the area, and encourage more people to visit Lincoln Road and support businesses there.
Councillor Angus Ellis, cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "This is fantastic news for residents and businesses, particularly those in Lincoln Road, as this area is long overdue some investment.
"The improvements we have delivered are a significant upgrade and I'm confident this will have a positive effect on the area," he said.
Scott Blackburn, senior projects manager for the M Group Ltd, said: "We are deeply grateful to everyone involved for their commitment, patience, and partnership in bringing this project to a positive and successful conclusion."
