Barnsley Town Hall clock has stopped working, just weeks after being reinstalled following major repair work.

Barnsley Council said the clock, which is 92 years old, had been fully rebuilt by specialist contractors after it stopped working in 2024.

The authority said the work was completed before Christmas and was tested last month, and earlier this month, before being reinstalled in the clock tower.

The council said the clock appeared to be working after it was reinstated, but had stopped last week. It added it had contacted the contractors to diagnose the problem.

Robin Franklin, cabinet spokesperson for regeneration and culture, said some of the clock parts had had to be specially made because components were no longer readily available due to the age of the clock.

"Unfortunately it stopped again last week, and our specialist contractors have been contacted to diagnose and repair the issue as soon as possible," he said.

"We know the town hall is a treasured landmark to local people and we thank everyone for their patience while we get this iconic clock repaired - for the long term."

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the council could not give any estimate for when the clock, which is currently stuck at 12:00 o'clock, might be working again.
