The dramatic Gorton and Denton by-election was seen as a pivotal test for Prime Minister Keir Starmer's leadership.

Labour has not lost in this area of Manchester since 1931 and the Greens significantly outperformed the party of government to win the contest.

The election was held after previous incumbent Andrew Gwynne resigned on health grounds.

It was controversial one for Labour, after its ruling body blocked Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham from standing as its candidate.
