RNLI volunteer awarded for 20 years saving lives

An RNLI volunteer has been presented with a long service award for his life-saving work over the last two decades.

Mark Barker joined Hartlepool RNLI 20 years ago after becoming "hooked" following a visit to the Ferry Road lifeboat station.

The 59-year-old, whose day job involves managing vehicles for Cleveland Police, works as one of the RNLI's inshore lifeboat helms and station mechanics.

Mr Barker said the time had "flown by" and his fellow volunteers had helped get him through some of the tougher moments he had faced during rescues.

"Over the years I have been to many shouts that have had both good and bad outcomes," he said.

"But at the end of the day it's the camaraderie and team work with the other crew members that helps you get through some of the tough moments that we sometimes face."

Mr Barker said one of his favourite moments was being part of the volunteer crew which won a Pride of Britain award in 2012.

The award recognised the crew's successful rescue of a teenager, who was trapped in sand while the tide was coming in.

"That was an amazing event to attend, I remember that we met lots of famous people and other award-winners who had amazing stories to tell," Mr Barker said.

He was presented with his medal by Hartlepool RNLI lifeboat operations manager Steve Pounder.

"Mark's dedication to the charity that saves lives at sea is outstanding and on behalf of all the crew and officials at the station we would like to say thank you and keep up the good work," he said.
