A new path is being built on a popular Highland hiking route in order to divert walkers away from traffic.

The 79-mile (118km) Great Glen Way between Fort William and Inverness can be completed within four to seven days.

Highland Council said safety concerns had been highlighted on the existing on-road section leading to Grotaig, south of Drumnadrochit.

A spokesperson said the new 3km (1.8 mile) off-road path, through Bunloit Estate, would be a "significant improvement". The project is expected to be completed by the end of March.

Planning consent was approved last year, alongside funding of £150,000 from Forestry and Land Scotland and Scottish Canals.

Highland Council said the project was being completed in partnership with Highlands Rewilding, the managers of Bunloit Estate.

The Great Glen Way is maintained by Highland Council rangers.
