Plans have been lodged for new city centre student accommodation.

Sunderland City Council's planning department has received an application for a building on Derwent Street in Sunderland, near the Park Lane Interchange.

According to planning documents, the upper floors would be tuned into studio flats for single occupancy.

The site includes commercial space on the ground floor which has been vacant for some time, the papers said.

The proposals are for seven studios to be created - five on the first floor, where an extension would be built.

A further two studios would be created on the second floor, each with an en-suite shower room, living space and study space.

A decision on the planning application is expected following a council consultation.
